Some ghouls are busy quarrelling over the corpses of the poor troopers who fell in battle. By cutting down a tree, you will succeed in creating a diversion that will allow you to approach the bodies without fear of being attacked. Obviously, if you make too much noise with your axe you may attract them in your direction. You must therefore cause a fall without putting yourself in danger.
