Some history books suggest that pirates built this lighthouse, to better control marine transportation on the North Sea. The only evidence supporting this hypothesis is that the most famous seaman at the time was François de Castaragne, and his last name was found on a few graves. If you want my opinion, I think this is quite a weak argument.
