Yeah, your information confirms what I suspected; it's probably a hipporage or a particularly violent kirantir. It is strange though - those creatures won't usually attack an armed band of humans. All the same, I think I know where to find our killer, though I don't know if it's alone. So make sure you're well prepared - you'll need your weapons if you want to stay alive.
